Kirkham Priory in September......
This walk is just off the A64 near Malton, and is one of the most picturesque walks in the area. We arranged to park at the Stone Trough pub, and began our walk from there. 20+ of us again, and all booked in for a late Sunday lunch.
After a coffee break at the Kirkham Priory visitor centre, we crossed over the bridge towards the railway crossing, and joined the riverside walking path through a kissing gate. This began quite easy, but the path was overgrown mainly with grass, but nettles and bramble had to be endured, and it was a little slippy in places. We all had wet legs by the time we reached our slight detour; due to the path being recently fenced off we decided to backtrack and join another easier path leading to a minor road, then walked through a small wood towards the old water mill. The mill was off route, so we decided to carry on to Howsham village, where the next leg of the walk began. |
Horsham is very pretty, and has an ornate church, and a small war memorial, and rows of cottages with beautiful gardens. At this point we realised that the walk must be much further than the stated 8 miles, as it was at least 2.75 miles to the Blacksmiths in Westow, we'd already done around 5 miles! The pub was a welcome sight, as today could have been the hottest day of year, so we stayed awhile.
Next we followed a cycling route which was hardly used for this purpose, in fact it would be impassable on a bike other than a MTB type. The views of Crambe and surrounding woods was excellent from here, as we descended back to Trough for our 4:00 lunch. Very good value and great beer as this place, with plenty of space to enjoy the weather outside! So 10 miles for this walk, but very enjoyable. |
