Follifoot to Spofforth Castle circular, 6 miles
Follifoot to Spofforth Castle Circular, Six miles. After meeting in the Spread, we travelled to Follifoot main street, and parked in the Harewood Arms. Avril's brother and sister-in-law joined us here where we began our walk. Joan and I have done this walk before, but it was a while ago, and to begin with, we weren't sure of directions! Luckily (joking!) I brought a map. It all became slightly familiar after about a mile or so, although we do have a reputation for accidentally extending our walks! Ken and Helen didn't know this, and seemed a little worried! Even more so when Joan suggested we stop for a coffee break after about two miles! Paul asked which way we go from this point, and I said: "We just follow the track, we can't go wrong," to which Paul replied: "Are you sure, because there's a signpost saying left just here?" Of course, this was the way, and I knew that really.....honestly. The walk took us past Spofforth Golf Club, and some lovely wooded areas close by to Spofforth. The Castle itself was of great interest to most of us, and we spent quite a while there. One thing I should mention is that the weather today was bright Sunshine, and in fact, warm enough to sunbathe! That's what some of the "less" interested were doing whilst the historians amongst us studied the Castle! |
On leaving, the walk still had many interesting sites to see. Strange gritstone formations on the right hand side of Crimple Beck were really fascinating, like a giant rock garden! Along the way we seemed to be followed by Red Kites, of which we took some decent photos of, almost....telephoto lens required really!
So, continuing to Follifoot, we arrived first at the splendid church, and took more photos, which are available to view. Then of course, the pub! Sunday lunch at the Harewood Arms was excellent, good quality and plenty of it. Of course, some people weren't impressed with the Sam Smiths selection, although the price was right! Another great walk and day out! By Phil |
