Although not actually a rail trail this route follows part of a the dismantled Hull to Barnsley railway. The route also follows the Yorkshire Wolds Way for a short period, passing through the densely, but pleasant, wooded plantation of Low Hunsley. The route follows clear footpaths which are well finger posted. The route starts at GR: SE 94983 34980 passing through a style, opposite to the parking area, following a farm track taking a left turn at GR: SE94942. Walking the edge of the field to GR: SE95060 34502 (Point A). Passing through the metal fence the route heads towards Low Hunsley Plantation to GR: SE94844 34312 entering the wood through a further gate. The route follows the footpath to GR: SE94235 33947 where the path splits (Point C). This walk takes the left hand footpath joining the Yorkshire Wolds Way for a short period of time (the path to the right is where this walk returns). Following the path through the woods to the left, the route follows the dismantled railway which runs parallel at GR: SE94324 to GR: SE93749 33074 (please note that the actual railway is not a right of way and therefore please keep to the public footpath). |
From here (Point D), passing through the large metal gate and turning right, the walk heads towards Comber Dale, passing Weedley Springs, where the footpath passes through a further large metal gate into Drewton Dale at GR: SE93623 33009 (Point E). Following the treeline along the field edge the route crosses over the dismantled railway at GR: SE93158 33206 onto a minor road at GR: SE93015 33334. Taking a left turn (ensuring that the public footpath to the right is not taken) head towards Drewton Manor to GR: SE92615 33330 (Point F). From this point take the footpath to the right and follow this uphill through Jackdaw Plantation taking the footpath to the right at GR: SE92605 33835 skirting Austin's Dale to GR: SE93365 34598, which leads to the B1230 at GR: SE93368 34598. Please take care at this point as the road can be busy - turn right and follow the the road a short distance to GR SE:93886 34965 turning a further right (this path is again clearly posted). Following this path around the the field edge the route head down a steep slop at the woods boundary of East Dale, GR: SE94159 43614. This stretch leads to GR: SE94235 33947 at point 'C' on the route map where a left turn is taken retracing your steps back to the Start of the walk. |
