Jervaulx Abbey 7.5 miles in June
Jervaulx Abbey 7.5 mile circular, Sunday, 21st June
The walk actually started from the pub car park, The Cover Bridge Inn, as we didn't realise the public car park was up the road! Not a problem because that's where we finished the walk. Following the river Ure to begin with we broke away to the Abbey tearooms which were exceptionally nice. Many of us had cake and some had lunch and cake. Of course some of us cheated and had our own sandwiches too! No names mentioned.
After our lunch break we visited the Abbey remains, which were quite interesting. They date back a little before my time! Well about 795 years actually. For me, the interesting part was someone leaving a full unopened bag of Wurthers Originals on a bench? We left them as we found them, as we thought the owner may return or it may be a set up!
The walk continued to Thornton Steward, a pleasant village with a great village hall where you can just walk in and make yourself a cup of tea! There were a few walkers in there already who asked us to join them but we thought we had better press on. Danby Hall could be seen from quite a distance and looked very impressive and well maintained. It dates back almost 600 years, and has been inhabited in nearly all that time by the Scrope family.
Continuing on, without any major detours we arrived at the pub. The Cover Bridge Inn is a cosy pub with a delightful hidden beer garden where we had a few drinks and chilled until there were a few spots of rain, so we dashed for cover in the pub and viewed a few photos of the walk. Another great walk, the rest of team missed a great day out!
