The Strines and Dale Dike Reservoir, July '14 Walk
July 2014, The Strines and Dale Dike reservoir
The walk was 5.5 miles, and we parked in the very pretty village of Lower Bradfield. There was so much going on, we could have probably just stayed here! Cricket, bowls, families having picnics, the great pub the Plough, which we did visit after our walk!
After having an orientating walk round the village, we set off, mainly Uphill, towards the Dale Dike Dam. We did actually miss a left turn, but got back on track, where the path was well marked! There was a disaster at the dam, back in 1864 when the dam cracked and burst! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Sheffield_Flood
Quite an interesting story, and to actually visit the site was fascinating. A memorial stone called CLOB is at the site, Centre Line Of Bank, where it burst!.
As the walk continued, we lost Rodger, who ended up on the other side of the reservoir. Paul and myself had a sit down on the bank of the reservoir, until Rodger realised his slight mistake and back tracked to the correct path! We then all caught up, and continued back to the village, and visited the great pub named The Plough. The food looked marvellous, but we had already taken lunch.......And Paul wanted to visit the Strines pub on the way back home, which hasn't really changed in 40 years, apparently!
There are many free downloads for this walk if you check out the Dam or the Strines.
