Memories of Denby Dale, September 2017
This Sunday walk was a last minute decision, as many of the group were unable to attend. Joan and I have done this walk in March last year as a recce for the group, so decided it would be a great option. The walk was supposed to be around 6 miles, but we recorded about 8 miles. visiting a pub called the George only added around half a mile, and we did follow the route! Eventually, with all the walks we do in this area, I think we will link all the footpaths together in multiple figures of eight, as there are so many.
Some of us were ready to pack in before starting, but a nice cup of coffee in the local cafe prepared us for the challenge ahead. We got off to a soggy start in the village, but by 11:00 the weather changed for the better. After a few steep hills, we were all nicely warmed up and enjoying the views. After we convinced the ladies in our party that a slight detour to the George pub was around half way, everyone was thankful of the refreshments, and the friendly welcome was much appreciated by all.
As the walk progressed, we realised that it was further than 6 miles, and we may be late for our lunch at 3:00. Ian found us a slight short cut, which probably saved a mile! That means it would've been around 9 miles. I do remember thinking this walk was quite a hard one when we did it originally......
At the end we were only 10 minutes late at the Dunkirk pub. Another warm welcome for us here. Our table for 9 was all ready, and we were ready for a drink to start! Although the pub was very noisy, due to loud children, we really did enjoy the great service, food and drink. It is more of a family pub, and when else can young families get together? I must be getting old........
