The Meltham Greenway, Folly Dolly Falls, Blackmoorfoot Reservoir & Royd Edge 8 miles walk
Half way through the year and we have done 3 walks. Too many holidays, if that is possible! This month we traveled to Meltham, West Yorkshire. Quite near to Holmfirth, it is equally as beautiful, and probably more hilly.
19 walkers this June, and unfortunately 4 missing at the start due a puncture. The 4 managed to meet us at half way at the Wills'O'Nats pub. We also visited the Travellers Rest, just down the hill from the Wills, it's thirsty work this walking life!
Although we had a drizzle shower at the beginning of the walk, the rest of the circuit was dry and a pleasant temperature. First a visit to Folly Dolly Falls just off the Meltham Greenway, then onwards uphill to Blackmoorfoot reservoir. As we headed a different route to the planned one, we joined the water authorities conduit; this is a water controlled barrier to hold excess water from the hills, and is a series of walled-in sections with sealed gates allowing the flow of water to be diverted. The many, many stiles were not a problem for us, it was almost a hurdle race for a couple of miles.
As we came to the final stage of the walk a choice could be made: straight down the road into Meltham, or a small loop onto Royd Edge and then rejoin the shorter route. It was split 50/50, as we had added a loop at the beginning of the route due to GPS errors.
Finally, we all met at The Fox Hole restaurant for a late lunch. Helen and her team worked hard to provide a full menu with great choices and top quality dishes. They closed off the whole place for us all from 16:00, so people and dogs could enjoy a carefree couple of hours with excellent company, and wonderful food.
Here are links to check out where we ate and drank!
